Brief description:
Tylophora asthmatica is a twining perennial with many roots, long, fleshy and elongated stems which are not much branched. The ovate or elliptic oblong shaped leaves are 5-10 cm. long and 2.5-5.7 cm. wide. The insignificant greenish yellow flowers which are 5-6 mm long are found in clusters at the terminal ends of the stems. The fruits and the follicles are 7.5-10 cm. long. As the species name suggests, this plant has been used successfully to cure asthma.
Medicinal use:
• The decoction of the dried leaves is useful as an emetic or an agent which causes vomiting.
• The decoction of dried leaves is useful as an expectorant which removes the mucous secretions from bronchial tubes in bronchitis and cough.
• The decoction of the leaves and infusion of the root bark has been found to give satisfactory results in dysentery, asthma, bronchitis, rheumatic and gouty pains.
• It is traditionally used as a folk remedy in certain regions of India for the treatment of bronchial asthma , inflammation , bronchitis, allergies, rheumatism and dermatitis. It also seems to be a good remedy in traditional medicine as anti-psoriasisThe roots are suggested to be a good natural preservative of food.
